Each year on September 17th, Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. This year, Rancho Viejo Middle School marked the occasion with a special honor, receiving the Civic Learning Award of Distinction. The statewide recognition is awarded to just one middle school in California for outstanding achievement in civic education.
California schools may be recognized at three levels through the Civic Learning Awards: Excellence, Distinction, and Merit, with additional schools receiving Honorable Mention recognition. This year, a total of 25 schools across the state were recognized, with Rancho Viejo among just two schools honored in Riverside County.
Rancho Viejo was presented with the Award of Distinction by Justice Carol Codrington, joined by Judge Jackson, who also attended last year when the school received a Civic Learning Award Honorable Mention, and a representative from the Office of Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh.
All of these distinguished guests witnessed the presentations offered by students on how they think the state of the country and the civic engagement of its citizens can be improved. Associated Student Body (ASB) students also attended the occasion to be officially sworn in to their ASB positions by Judge Jackson, where students held their hands over their student handbook. Students presenters received official civic learning certificates, and Rancho Viejo was also extended an official recognition from Senator Ochoa Bogh.
Congratulations to the students, staff, and entire Rancho Viejo Middle School community on this outstanding statewide recognition and their continued commitment to civic learning!
